Decline in University of Oregon’s out-of-state enrollment intensifies budget woes

Over the past two weeks, University of Oregon President Karl Scholz has been preparing the UO community for budget struggles. In a May 20 email, he listed three factors contributing to a deficit — since projected to be $25.7 million — including cuts to research funding, lack of state support, and a decline in the number of out-of-state students.

These factors have combined to create “a level of financial difficulty the university has not experienced in many years,” he wrote.
