Lane County lawsuit: Weak security at 2021 county fair breached contract, trial June 24

Lane County has accused its security provider of breaching its contract in the events leading up to the shooting at 2021 Lane County Fair that injured one person. The case is scheduled to go to trial June 24.

What happened at the 2021 Lane County Fair shooting?

According to reports, two youths and a male adult got into an altercation at the 2021 Lane County Fair, which resulted in one of the youths, who was at the time 16 years old, displaying a gun. A bystander, later identified as Bryan Holiman, attempted to intervene and was assaulted by friends of the youths, police said.

The youth fired the gun while being contacted by security, police said, shooting a woman in the arm.

Allegations in lawsuit

Lane County sued AEGIS, doing business as District Security, Health & Safety. Lane County accused District Security of breaching the terms of its fair security contract by:

  • Not providing evidence of its insurance policy.
  • Not providing daily security logbooks and incident logs.
  • Not having sufficient trained staff working on the day of the 2021 shooting.

In its most recent motion for judgement, Lane County seeks a refund of the $11,401 it paid AEGIS, which was a 25% down payment for fair security, plus interest.

AEGIS has not participated in case yet

So far, AEGIS has not participated in the case. Every document in the court record was from the county or the court. On April 14, Lane County Circuit Court Judge Debra Velure declared AEGIS “in default,” meaning it failed to respond to the summons or complaint.

Trial details

The trial is scheduled to start June 24 and last four days. It will be overseen by Velure and a 12-person jury.

Bystander settles own suit

Bryan Holiman was injured after tackling the youth gunman at the 2021 county fair and sued both Lane County and AEGIS, requesting $827,537 in medical expenses, lost wages and noneconomic damages. According to the record, the parties settled that case and it was dismissed by the court May 28…
