University of Oregon lays off dozens of employees, more expected

The University of Oregon laid off 42 employees last week and more layoffs are expected in coming months as UO faces budget shortfalls, university spokesperson Eric Howald told The Oregonian/OregonLive.

The 42 employees worked in the College of Arts and Sciences, the university’s largest school. They included 11 faculty members as well as staff in administration, human resources, communications, grants and academic support. These layoffs addressed a more than $3.5 million deficit for the college this fiscal year, which ends Monday, Howald said.

In the next few months, UO expects to carry out more layoffs and potentially furloughs, as the university faces a budget shortfall of $25 million to $30 million for the coming fiscal year, Howald said…
