Greenhill Humane Society rescues severely neglected dog

EUGENE, Ore. — A young dog in critical condition is now safe and receiving urgent veterinary care at Greenhill Humane Society after being discovered alone and abandoned on a remote logging road deep in Oregon’s national forest land.

The pup, now named Honeycomb, was found late at night on July 11, emaciated, dehydrated, and with infected wounds on all four feet. According to his finder, a camper who happened upon Honeycomb east of Coos Bay, the dog was so weak and hungry that he eagerly devoured a quart of shredded chicken but showed no interest in water. The camper, concerned about Honeycomb’s condition and his chances of survival, drove hours out of his way to bring him to Greenhill for help.

Estimated at just one year old, Honeycomb weighs barely 20 pounds, well below what is healthy for a dog his size. Greenhill’s veterinary team determined that he had a body condition score of just 1 out of 9, indicating severe malnutrition. He was covered in open, infected sores on his legs and paws, many likely the result of prolonged exposure to rough terrain or improperly applied compression wraps, which were found on his feet when he was discovered.
