Lookout PM: Private school in turmoil

Good evening,

  • The future of the private Far Horizons Montessori School in Eugene is up in the air, as several teachers have quit over not being paid and the director has said she will resign. Parents are trying to figure out what’s next.
  • A University of Oregon student died this week after she had been hit by a car 10 days earlier while riding a bike near East Eighth Avenue and Hilyard Street. Elizabeth Cardenas was 21 and had come from Mexico to study at the UO.
  • Federal prosecutors have accused a Springfield man of running a cyberattacks-for-hire scheme. He is alleged to have created a malicious “botnet” that would hammer other computers or servers with unwanted traffic. Ethan J. Foltz faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
  • EWEB is working on a $5 million upgrade of the Danebo substation. The hope is it will better withstand the “big one” — or any earthquake, for that matter.
  • Due to construction, you might want to avoid the area around High Street, Sixth Avenue, as well as the Sixth Avenue off-ramp from the Ferry Street Bridge viaduct.
  • Do you have stories about Sue Kesey, Springfield Creamery or Nancy’s yogurt? Vanessa Salvia would like to hear them for a possible follow-up story on Kesey’s legacy. The Springfield Creamery co-founder died this week at 86.
