Card fees challenge Eugene eateries; Bellizzi’s cash strategy works

EUGENE, Ore. – The owner of Bellizzi’s Pizza Joint, Jeremy Bellizzi, made a bold decision to eliminate the use of pennies in his restaurant in the early 2020s. This move marked a cultural shift after nearly a decade away from the industry.

“We eliminated it all together, we went from 99 cents on the dollar, 4.99, 5.99, to just rounding up to the nearest dollar. It feels really different, you know, you go to your tillbox, and it’s hard to break a hundred dollar bill nowadays,” said Bellizzi.

As customers increasingly use card payments, businesses face challenges with transaction fees. These fees can range from two to three percent, and if a tip is added later, it can rise to three to five percent, depending on the card company…
