WET START, SOAKING FINISH
It will start with light rain this morning, then turn steadily wetter as the day goes on. The first half of today should be manageable for most plans, with rain staying fairly light through the afternoon. Once through noon, there will be a noticeable uptick in rainfall, and the evening will turn outright soggy.
Temperatures will feel unusually mild for this time of year. Most places around the metro will be in the upper 50s today, and a few spots may briefly touch 60. That’s closer to early fall than mid-winter. Overnight lows have also been remarkably warm — the last two mornings set records for the warmest low temperature observed on that date at the airport.
There will be gusty winds at times reaching 30+ mph across the metro and valleys through tomorrow morning.
DAYS OF STEADY, HEAVY RAIN
Once the steadier rain arrives today, it will not truly let up for a couple of days. There will be lighter moments at times, but there will not be a true dry break through midweek. The heaviest bursts of rain are expected this afternoon, later tonight, again tomorrow, and once more late tomorrow night into early Wednesday morning.
Over the next three days, much of northwest Oregon and southwest Washington will pick up very high rainfall totals. Many towns in the Portland area north toward Olympia could see several inches of rain by Wednesday. Even communities farther south toward Eugene will likely measure at least an inch. In the Coast Range and Cascade foothills, rainfall could reach extreme levels, with totals that are rarely seen over just a few days.
FLOODING AND LANDSLIDE RISK INCREASES
Because of the prolonged rain and already saturated ground, creek, river, and drainage issues will become increasingly likely tomorrow and especially later this week. Areas near rivers, small streams, steep hillsides, and known slide zones should stay alert. Mud and debris slides will be a growing threat in vulnerable locations…
