‘I am disgusted’ Springfield schools to cut 36 teachers mid-year

Springfield Public Schools teachers will be getting layoff notices in the coming days, following a reduction in force resolution passed in a split vote by the board on Jan. 12.

The layoffs are meant to mitigate a $2.34 million budget deficit for the 2025-26 school year. SPS Chief Operations Officer Brett Yancey said the current budget cannot account for the district’s latest offer in mediation between the district and Springfield Education Association (SEA) teachers union.

“Nobody wins in budget reductions,” Yancey said during his presentation, a statement met with indignant commentary from the more than 200 people in attendance. “It’s very difficult. It’s very emotional. It’s very important.”…
