Funding loss could shut down 30+ Oregon wildfire cameras amid growing fire danger

SALEM Ore. (KPTV) – More than 30 wildfire detection cameras on the west side of Oregon could be shut down if the organization that operates them doesn’t receive the state funding it needs.

“At the end of the day, it prevents a small fire from becoming large,” said Levi Hopkins, the deputy chief for Policy and Planning with the Oregon Department of Forestry.

Oregon Hazard Labs, a research and public safety organization at the University of Oregon, operates 70 wildfire cameras throughout the state. Last year alone, those cameras made more than 11,000 detections…
