Knife-armed man climbs 100 feet up tree, drawing SWAT and drones in Eugene

EUGENE, Ore. — A man armed with a knife climbed approximately 100 feet up a spruce tree in Eugene on Saturday, prompting a large police and fire response, and a shelter-in-place message for nearby residents.

The Eugene Police Department (EPD and Eugene Springfield Fire (ESF) responded at 2:15 p.m. on March 7th to the 2400 block of Jackson Street after a disorderly man was reported to be in a tree, and bleeding from a non-life-threatening, self-inflicted knife wound.

EPD tells us officers tried to calm him, and visually confirmed he had a knife. Police used drones to get a closer view of the man and his actions in the tree, and to monitor his behavior…
