Bystanders chase down hit-and-run driver in Eugene crash

EUGENE, Ore. – Police arrested two drivers suspected of driving under the influence after separate crashes on Friday and Saturday, according to the Eugene Police Department.

EPD officials said the first crash happened at 5:09 p.m. on April 3 at East 11th Avenue and Franklin Boulevard and was reported as a rollover incident involving a Ford Econoline and Toyota Highlander, according to Eugene Police. The driver of the Econoline ran from the crash on foot, but bystanders chased him down and held him at 11th and Kincaid until police arrived at 5:15 p.m., police said. All three people in the Toyota Highlander went to a local hospital for treatment. Police identified the van driver as 38-year-old Franklin Winter Aurich III.

Aurich went to a local hospital for evaluation before being taken to the Lane County Jail. He faces charges including driving under the influence, hit and run, driving while suspended, reckless driving, three counts of reckless endangering, second-degree assault and aggravated driving while suspended.
