HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) — Law enforcement in Henderson County is raising the alarm for a scam targeting residents in the area.
According to the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, some residents have been receiving a scam involving a caller stating the victim has missed jury duty. The caller falsely states that a warrant or summons will be issued unless an immediate payment is made.
The sheriff’s office reminds the public that they do not call people if they missed jury duty and never ask for money, fines or financial information over the phone. Officials say scammers may try to trick you by:
- Spoofing caller ID: Making the call appear on your screen as though it originates directly from a legitimate law enforcement number or government agency.
- Using real names: Citing the names of actual local law enforcement personnel or judges to build false credibility.
- Creating urgency: Threatening immediate arrest or jail time to induce panic and force quick compliance.
- Alternative payment methods: Demanding payment through cash drop-offs, wire transfers, digital payment apps, prepaid debit cards, or gift cards.
If you receive a call, the sheriff’s office recommends doing the following:
- Hang up immediately: Do not engage with the caller or provide any personal identification or financial information.
- Verify independently: If you are concerned about your jury status, contact the Henderson Circuit Court Clerk or the Sheriff’s Office directly using verified public phone numbers.
- Report the call: Inform local law enforcement of the incident to help track these fraudulent operations.
