The Indiana German Heritage Society has named Father John Boeglin as the 2026 Hoosier German-American of the Year. Father Boeglin is a senior priest in the Diocese of Evansville and is from Haubstadt. Father John has been extremely active in preserving and promoting the German culture in southwestern Indiana, especially during the many years he served in Jasper and Celestine. He continues to do so throughout his retirement.

During 44 years of active ministry, culminating in his retirement in 2022, he consistently used his pastoral leadership to preserve and celebrate the German roots of southern Indiana communities. He remains fluent in German and has intentionally continued using and promoting the language throughout his retirement, recognizing that language is one of the most important connections to cultural identity and heritage.
Fr. Boeglin’s commitment to German-American history is evident in his scholarly work. In 1992, while serving as pastor of St. Peter Celestine Parish, he authored the extensively researched book Celestine, Indiana: A Sesquicentennial History. This important work documented the history of one of Indiana’s most distinctive German-Catholic communities and included a comprehensive record of the ancestral origins of local families. The publication remains a valuable resource for historians, genealogists, and descendants seeking to understand the German roots of the region…
