EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – The Evansville Police Department paid out more than $4 million in overtime in 2025, with two detectives each earning $60,000 in overtime pay alone, according to department figures.
Police Chief Philip Smith said the overtime pays for additional patrol details addressing gun crime, coverage for minimum staffing requirements on shifts, and police presence at large community events such as the Fall Festival.
“I make no cause about providing overtime for additional details, to address gun crime… I provide overtime opportunities for that, and I make no apologies for that,” Smith said…
