Parents, make a note of this news: when the 2027-28 school year kicks off, every EVSC student will be in class on day one.
The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation is doing away with its two-day “soft start,” a staggered opening that has been part of the back-to-school routine since 2020. Under that setup, students eased into the year over the first couple of days rather than all arriving at once.
Why EVSC is Making the Change
So why, after six years, are we seeing this change? The EVSC says the soft start had its perks, but it also created a few headaches. Attendance on those early days became a real problem, with plenty of students simply staying home until the second week of school. And for many families, the short first days meant scrambling to line up childcare for younger kids, which is a tough ask when you’re already juggling work and school schedules.
How District Leaders Are Responding
District leaders say they made the call after weighing feedback from the community, and they’re feeling good about it. They point out that schools already put in a lot of work getting ready for each new year, and they’re confident buildings can give every student a strong start from the opening bell.
Support For Students Moving Up
The EVSC says kids moving up to a new school or grade level will still get extra support as they settle in, with special attention for the youngest learners heading into kindergarten for the first time.

Keep in mind the change isn’t quite official yet. The full 2027-28 calendar is expected to be shared later this fall, after the Board of School Trustees gives its formal approval.
