Amazon says it’s in the early stages of deciding whether to develop a data center in Posey County. An Amazon spokesperson says that if the company moves forward, the project would go through a full public review process. The company says it plans to work with residents and local officials to understand community priorities and address concerns. The statement came as the Posey County Area Plan Commission held a public hearing on Thursday on proposed changes to the county’s unified development ordinance. Much of the public comment focused on new regulations for data center construction. Attorney Mike Schopmeyer, with Evansville law firm Kahn, Dees, Donovan and Kahn, represents Amazon Web Services. Schopmeyer told the commission Amazon is no longer considering its initial proposed location. He says the company is now looking at a more industrial site closer to major highways. Schopmeyer also said Amazon will not apply for permits or begin work until the county’s ordinance process is complete. He argued the proposed amendments are overly restrictive and need to be more balanced. Schopmeyer was limited to three minutes of public comment. An audience member’s attempt to give him additional time was not allowed under the commission’s rules.
