New owner of Lamasco Bar & Grill discusses restaurant’s past, present and future

EVANSVILLE, In. (WEHT) – Lamasco Bar & Grill is now under new ownership. The bar reopened on Tuesday with a revamped menu.

New owner & chef Charles Mereday says he moved to the Evansville area in July and had been looking for a location to open a business. He says that when Lamasco went up for sale, it became the perfect opportunity.

Authorities say the bar had previously been the focus of a lengthy drug investigation on Franklin Street that resulted in several arrests. Its previous owner, Amy Word, was arrested for maintaining a common nuisance but denies any wrongdoing.

Mereday says that he doesn’t plan on any major remodeling for the bar and that he plans to maintain its personality. “The reality of it is, Lamasco has been open for 90 years, you know that I mean? And that’s the most important think that we want to focus on,” he says. “You know, it’s a historical location for Evansville; and you know, the ups and downs recently, I don’t think that affects us at all. We’re going to have a fresh start. We’re putting out some great food and a good product. We’ve got a great team in place so I don’t think there’s any issue about the previous ownership or anything like that.”
