HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – As drivers in Henderson already know, traffic changes have been a recurring theme along Second Street where it meets with U.S. 41. Officials are now saying that major changes to traffic patterns will be coming over the next year and a half.
At Tuesday night’s meeting of the Henderson City Commission board, officials with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) and Ragle, Inc. provided an update on the proposed redesign of the Second Street corridor as part of the Interstate 69 Ohio River Crossing project.
These changes include the installation of three roundabouts, two of which will service the on- and off-ramps from Highway 41. The third roundabout will be placed at the intersection of Second Street and State Road 2084 in front of the entrance to North Middle School.

Brian Aldridge, the deputy design manager for the project, says that roundabouts were chosen mostly to improve traffic safety in the area. “Safety is really the biggest benefit; we’ve found throughout the country, it doesn’t matter where we’ve built roundabouts, we see anywhere from a 40 to 60 percent reduction in crashes. Obviously recognizing the importance of this corridor to the community, not to mention the fact that we’ve got such large schools located along the corridor, safety is always paramount with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.”
