OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEHT) — Kentucky students might soon be banned, by law, from using cellphones in the classroom. On Tuesday, The House Education Committee passed Bill 383.
The bill states devices that make a sound, vibrate or display messages cannot be used during class time. Leaders say that restriction could extend to any school sponsored event , including those held off school property.

Owensboro Public Schools says distractions are real, but they believe their current policy does a good job of keeping students on track. A spokesperson for the public school system says he trusts staff to take disciplinary action in a way that works best for them.
He says banning devices poses a concern for some parents.
“If something were to happen, those parents are going to want to be able to get in touch with their kids and know they’re safe… Taking [phones] away and prohibiting those items, you know, the parents have a real concern there,” says Jared Revlett of Owensboro Public Schools.
