OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEHT) — Kentucky State Representative Suzanne Miles, from Owensboro, is proposing students be able to use state tax dollars to fund their education outside of the public school system. It would require a change to the Kentucky constitution, but supporters say it will empower parents to make choices for their children, regardless of income or where they live.
Currently 33 states and Washington D.C. have adopted this policy. If passed, opponents say state tax dollars would be taken away from public schools and given to private and charter schools.

School officials in Owensboro say students can still receive high-level education within the public school system.
“The Owensboro Innovation Academy is a project based learning school. The idea of giving public funding taxpayer dollars…for a student to leave a public school to go to a private or charter school, is a huge detriment to public education,” says Jared Revlett of Owensboro Public Schools.
