EVANSVILLE – Meteorologists say Evansville could see even more rain than first expected when the remnants of Hurricane Helene sweep over the area later Thursday and into the weekend.
According to an update from the National Weather Service on Thursday morning, Evansville and other parts of Southwestern Indiana could get as much as 4 inches. That’s up from the 2 inches forecasters predicted earlier in the week.
Here’s what else to know about the storm.
When will the rain come? And who will get hit the hardest?
Helene will likely creep into the area Thursday evening. Evansville will see a 70% chance of rain starting around 6 p.m. It becomes a certainty Friday, with deluges lasting all day and through Saturday evening, when precipitation chances will still linger around 75%.
Vanderburgh, Warrick, Posey and the surrounding Indiana counties now lie in the 3-4 inch range. Most of Henderson County should expect the same.
But since Helene is marching from the gulf and weakening as she moves, our neighbors to the south will get hit hardest. Most of Western Kentucky – including Madisonville, Hopkinsville and Paducah – could get as much as 5 inches of rain. Pockets of Southern Illinois could see the highest amounts as well.
