Official with Haitian Center of Evansville says shots fired at home “not a hate crime”

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – An incident believed to have been an attack on a local Haitian community leader was not a hate crime according to Gelina Mascoe, the executive director of the Haitian Center of Evansville.

Mascoe said shots were fired at a pastor’s Evansville home in September around the time Springfield, Ohio’s Haitian community was thrust into the national spotlight. Concern over the shooting incident prompted a joint statement released by the United Way of Southwestern Indiana, Evansville City Council and other community leaders condemning violence towards the local immigrant community.

Mascoe says although concerning at the time, police have now determined the incident was not a hate crime.
