Church closing after 175 years plans to carry on legacy

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – After nearly two centuries, one long-time Evansville church is closing its doors for good. Zion Evangelical United Church of Christ is planning its final service for October 27.

“The pews were filled at one time, the balcony upstairs was filled at one time. And then, as the years passed, more and more spaces became empty,” says Zion Co-President Michele Daum.

Daum and her husband, Brian, were married inside Zion Church over 40 years ago. They are filled with bittersweet emotions as the final service approaches.

“It’s the memory and the church family itself and the friends that you meet over the years,” says Brian Daum, Co-President of Zion. “The people, the faith family of Zion,” adds Michele, “are beautiful and welcoming.”

The church has seen additions and renovations in its 175 year history, but also declining numbers. The church made the decision to close its doors and to look for a suitable non-profit to take over.
