HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – 41 birds were rescued from the home of a Henderson man this week.
Since 2014, Stacey McCord-Crooks says she’s been trying to educate the man on why the birds are not being cared for properly.
Crooks serves as the President of both the Humane Society of Henderson County and the Henderson County Animal Control.
Now 10 years later, somebody called in and reported the man about the birds.
Both the Henderson County Animal Control and the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the removal of birds.
The species of birds recovered include different types of parrots, 8 Black Capped Conures, 5 Lovebirds and 17 Cockatiels.
The humane society says the man responsible kept the tropical birds out in 30-degree weather in the winter.
Crooks says the man had also smoked in the house- which is something that she says can kill a bird.
The 41 birds have been taken to a shelter in another state.
“They can be very sweet, but they are extremely loud,” says Crooks. “They are messy and having 41 birds would be taxing on anyone even on rescues and they have more than that but when you aren’t physically able or financially, able to take care of them, then you are going to be in a situation where this gentleman was and there’s a lot of things that can kill them.”
The humane society says these types of situations can happen as these birds are being trafficked from their native countries.
The organization also encourages potential owners to conduct thorough research before thinking about owning an exotic bird and not to buy them from a breeder.
