“They were kids too”: Shooting victim’s father reacts to recent arrests

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) — A balloon release was held Sunday afternoon at Tepe Park to honor Malachi Young, who was shot and killed Tuesday night. The family speaks out after two Evansville teenagers were arrested in connection to Young’s murder .

Family members, friends and loved ones gathered at Tepe Park to share their respects and to remember the 17-year old.

James Young, Malachi’s father, spoke about how the violence needs to stop and reacts to the recent arrests made in connection to his son’s death .

“I don’t have much to say. It’s a little relief,” says James. “But they were kids too.”

Malachi’s sister, Cherita, shares how much it means to see the people who loved her brother gathering together to remember him.

“My brother touched a lot of people,” says Cherita. “There’s a lot of people who loved, adored my brother. The fact that we can join together and honor his presence and his passing, it means a lot.”
