HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) — Several Evansville residents have become victims of recent scams in the city, going on to lose thousands of dollars in the process.
On Friday, a resident reported a scam he fell victim to after receiving a letter in the mail claiming he won money.
However, it was said he needed to send gift cards in order to collect the winnings. The victim says he purchased the gift cards and sent the information.
The victim lost approximately $2,000.
In another report on Friday, the victim claimed a person was posing as PayPal customer service saying there was a problem with her account.
The victim was told she needed to go to a Bitcoin or cash ATM at a specific address. She says she logged into the machine and followed the directions with the suspect on the phone.
After following all the instructions, the victim says she found $1,494 had been removed from her account, and had no idea where it was moved into.
In frequent posts on social media, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office says to look for signs of fraud before wiring money or purchasing gift cards as those are typically signs of a scam.
