Stranger works to save deadly accident victim’s life in Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) — A pedestrian was killed after being struck by an SUV on Washington Avenue , but not before a woman rushed to try and save her life.

Ashley Simpson was on her way home from work when she saw a woman, lying face down on the street. She says she did what she could to save that woman’s life.

Authorities believe an SUV on Washington Avenue near Burdette, hit a woman in her thirties or forties just before 4 p.m.. They say the driver of the SUV was cooperative on the scene.

Simpson is certified in CPR as a certified nurse’s assistant. She was on her way home when she saw the accident and her nurse’s instinct kicked in.

“I feel as a medical professional, it is my duty to stop and help where I’m able to,” says Simpson. “Somebody out on the street, you wouldn’t think that you would just come up on someone that would need such serious assistance.”

Simpson says she went into “automatic mode” performing CPR even though she says the woman did not have a pulse.

“I didn’t think about anything. I was counting. I was singing Baby Shark in my head. That’s how I trained my kids to do CPR. It’s a way to keep on beat,” says Simpson.
