Ongoing phone scams uses the HCSO caller ID

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) — The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office warns residents of an ongoing scam which uses the Sheriff’s Office phone number.

Authorities say a scammer called a resident claiming to be a member of HCSO and told them they needed to pay a fine for missed jury duty otherwise, a warrant will be issued for their arrest.

Police say the victim was then asked to purchase a loadable credit card with the funds to pay for the fine, and to provide them with the card information. The victim followed the instructions and was asked to report to HSCO to confirm payment, which led to the investigation to be opened.

HCSO urges the public to remain vigilant as they say no law enforcement agency will contact people over the phone about paying fines for missed jury duty.

Authorities say anyone who receives a call from a number matching any law enforcement agency instructing them to pay fine, to hang up immediately and report the incident to local police.
