NWS: Tornado touched down in Evansville during torrential rainstorm

The heavy rainfall and flash flooding got the headlines on Friday when severe weather moved through the city of Evansville, but Mother Nature also dropped a brief weak tornado on the city.

The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado touched down for about two minutes (4:09 p.m. to 4:11 p.m.) on the West Side of Evansville. The tornado was on the ground for 1.29 miles, was 25 yards wide and had winds of 85 mph. The weather service classified the tornado as an EF-0 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, which is used to rate the intensity of such storms. EF-0 is the weakest level.

The storm began along Tekoppel Avenue south of the Lloyd Expressway and jogged east/northeast. The storm crossed the Lloyd Expresssway at St. Joseph Avenue and lifted near the West Side Nut Club Park…
