Indiana Dept. of Health reports possible ‘historic decrease’ in infant mortality rate

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – The number of Hoosier babies who don’t make it to their first birthday is decreasing, from a rate of 6.6 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2023 to 6.3 in 2024.

“We have saved over 200 babies related to unsafe sleep deaths and just infant mortality,” Ashley Hardesty, Nurse Manager in the Mother Baby Unit at Ascension St. Vincent Evansville said. “That’s super huge because even one baby is great, but saving 200 is even better.”

This comes from provisional data from the Indiana Department of Health, which says if the data remains the same when finalized, it would be the lowest rate of infant deaths in the state since 1900…
