I grew up hearing the phrase “where the Corvette sits high in the sky” whenever I’d watch television. Bennett Motors in Evansville, Indiana, advertised on all the network affiliates, so I seldom went more than a day without hearing it.
On the strength of this locally iconic slogan, I always wanted to drive by Bennett Motors whenever we’d go to Evansville when I was a kid. Dad was happy to acquiesce since he found it fascinating as well. At the heart of it all, mounting a signature American ride like a Corvette high above your business is ingenious. What a billboard.
I’m not sure if Bennett Motors was Audubon Chrysler’s inspiration, but the Henderson dealership has been known for decades for, among other things, having a Dodge Viper, an iconic sports car in its own right, perched high on a platform over its property. It has always made me look up when I pass it, so I’ve missed it these past few months while it was down for repairs. But you’ll see why it had to come down in these images…
