After 75 Years, Beloved Ice Cream Shop Passes the Scoop, and a Legacy

My first real job was at Lic’s Deli & Ice Cream in my hometown of Princeton, Indiana. I loved pretty much everything about it, and I made so many great memories.

I learned the value of working hard, treating every customer the same, and that being the Group Leader and working with your friends is a challenge to say the least. Those lessons shaped my work ethic and have stuck with me for life. And I still love the smell of liquid Comet.

A Legacy Built on Love, Ice Cream, and Community

Lic’s opened its doors in Evansville in 1949, and for 63 of those years, it was proudly owned by Don Smith and his wife Jane, along with their children Jamia Brown and Kara Combs. Together, they grew Lic’s from one store into a local favorite, known for iconic Choco-Cremes, fresh deli sandwiches, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The family’s dedication inspired loyalty from customers and employees alike; some team members have worked there for nearly 50 years! Now it is time for the family to pass the scoop.

A Heartfelt Goodbye from the Smith Family

“For two generations, you’ve let us be part of your lives: birthday celebrations, lunch breaks, first dates, after-school treats, and countless everyday moments. It’s been the honor of a lifetime. Now, it’s time for a new chapter, for us and for Lic’s.”

A Sweet Future with a New Owner

The Smith family is passing the scoop to Jodi Ashby, who shares their love for the community and dedication to quality.

“I’m incredibly grateful to God, to the Smith family, and the amazing Lic’s team for trusting me with this treasured company. Lic’s is more than just ice cream & deli shoppes, it’s a legacy, and I’m honored to help write its next chapter.”

Why Lic’s Will Always Matter to Me

Lic’s wasn’t just my first job, it was my first real introduction to responsibility, teamwork, and serving others. I’ll always be thankful for the Smith family and the coworkers who taught me how to work with pride and purpose…
