Meet the Husband-and-Wife Duo Baking the Bread Everyone’s Talking About

Thanks to Taylor Swift, sourdough bread is trending, and if you have no idea how to bake bread, I found a new local bakery that you need to know about.

Sourdough Starters

I’ve seen many people ask about how to make sourdough bread in different Facebook groups. It seems like a bit of a science project that begins with a sourdough starter. It’s kind of like a little pet that you feed, and it grows.

It’s basically a living culture of flour and water that captures wild yeast and beneficial microbes from the environment. Over time, these microbes grow and create bubbles of carbon dioxide, which makes bread rise, while also giving sourdough its signature tangy flavor. Sounds like a lot of work. So, maybe we leave all of that to the sourdough pros.

Family-Owned Bakery

Abby and Tim Smith are the husband-and-wife team behind Convivium Micro Bakery + Homestead in Mount Vernon, Indiana. After more than 15 years of baking from scratch for family and friends, Abby turned her passion into something bigger. In June 2024, the couple officially opened their micro bakery, sharing their love for fresh, homemade sourdough with the community.

Sourdough and More

While artisanal sourdough bread is their specialty, Convivium also offers a variety of sourdough baked goods and other handcrafted treats. Each item is made with care in their cottage bakery, combining time-honored techniques with fresh, wholesome ingredients.

A Growing Homestead

Beyond the bakery, the Smiths’ homestead adds even more local goodness to the mix. Customers can find seasonal produce and farm-fresh, free-range eggs, making Convivium not just a bakery but a true community hub for fresh, quality food.
