HENDERSON, Ky (WEHT) – Wesselman Woods in Evansville is requesting permission from the Parks Board to conduct its annual deer hunt.
Officials say deer in the area are detrimental to new growth oak and hickory trees in the forest because the deer eat the vegetation faster than it can grow.
“We have a lot of our mature canopy species like our oaks and hickories that are not regenerating because when the deer browse the forests, they eat all the oaks and hickories, so sometimes, we have a big tree that falls, there’s not an oak or hickory to replace that,” says Derek Walsh, Director of Nation Resources and Research. “So, this is an issue of health of the forest years down the line.”…
