Indiana Winter Safety: Officials Urge Caution on Icy Bridges Across Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and Evansville

Indianapolis, IN – As a surge of Arctic air and light snow sweep across Indiana this month, transportation officials are warning drivers in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and Evansville to use caution as bridges and overpasses begin icing over faster than surrounding roadways.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), bridges freeze first because they’re surrounded by cold air on all sides. This exposure causes them to lose heat rapidly, allowing surface ice to form even when air temperatures hover slightly above freezing. “It’s one of the most deceptive winter hazards,” the NWS said Friday.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has begun pre-treating major interstates including I-65, I-70, and I-69, applying brine and salt to elevated bridges, ramps, and curves ahead of an overnight freeze…
