Many moons ago, I was in Bloomington, Indiana, moving into college, starting a new beginning away from Evansville. One of the first girls I met said, “Oh my gosh, you have such a strong southern accent,” which instantly made me laugh. I do not believe I have an accent, but I would agree I have the common drawl several southern Indiana folks share. What caught my attention even more was when she said, “You must be from Evansville”. How did she know that by my accent? Do we Evansville folk really have an accent that I’ve been denying my whole life?
