Remembering November 6: Photographer pulls tornado victims from rubble

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) — Thursday marks 20 years since a deadly F-3 tornado changed the Tri-State forever. Eyewitness News’ Chief Photographer John Simpson was there that night, arriving before first responders, and jumped into action.

20 years ago on November 6th, Simpson was called to the Eastbrook Mobile Home Park. Immediately, he heard screams for help in the darkness. The only light around was the one on his camera. When he realized people were trapped, John knew what he had to do. He immediately put down his camera and started helping the victims.

“When I got in and I heard people yelling for help, people were walking around in their pajamas,” Simpson said. “They had self extricated themselves. I saw Christy Nolan first, she was the lady on the door, and she couldn’t move. She was in so much pain. And it looked like her trailer had just folded in on her.”…
