New K-9 makes immediate impact in suspected arson case

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – Officials say it’s been less than a day on the job and a K-9 named Indie is already putting her nose to work.

The Evansville Fire Department (EFD) says on the morning of November 20, K-9 Indie alerted to the presence of ignitable liquid accelerants at the scene of a residential structure fire in the 900 block of North Morton Avenue. Officials say based on Indie’s alerts and observations from her handler, Fire Investigator Patrick Moore, the fire is now being investigated as a suspected arson.

EFD says Indie is a two-year-old black Lab. She originally trained for two years to become a guide dog for the visually impaired. While she excelled in many areas, her curious personality made her better suited for a different path – ignitable liquid detection work. She went on to complete six months of specialized detection training, where she thrived.

Officials say Indie will serve the community as a key partner in fire investigation, public education and community outreach.
