Of all the Thanksgiving traditions I grew up with, the biggest one, the most obvious one…the no-brainer, if you will, has been the big meal. In a Family Feud survey, that would probably be the number one answer.

But times and people change. Schedules change. Sometimes it becomes difficult to have a gazillion people over to the house on the fourth Thursday of Thanksgiving. Sometimes you have to have Thanksgiving on another day to accommodate everyone. We’ve encountered that in our shrinking family, which was never very big to begin with.
Our big dinner now happens on either the weekend before or the weekend after Thanksgiving. We’ve done it that way for a little more than 10 years now, and it works beautifully. Still, Turkey Day is Turkey Day, and it’s nice to have restaurants open that day. And when I saw the 2025 list, my eyes just about popped out of my head.

It used to be “over the river and through the woods to Grandmother’s house we go,” but now it’s Cracker Barrel or Windy Hollow Biscuit House or the Chinese restaurant of your choice. And there are plenty more where they came from. I had no idea this many eateries throw out the welcome mat on Thanksgiving these days…
