Insurance company claims Evansville firefighters acted negligently in lawsuit

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – An insurance company is suing the city of Evansville claiming that the city’s fire department failed to adequately respond to a fire at a restaurant in December of last year, leading to damages over $1,600,000.

As we previously reported, the Evansville Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at Madeline’s Restaurant in the 400 block of South East Second Street on December 26, 2024. However, the complaint filed with the United States District court claims that the fire department left the scene after erroneously determining that the fire had been extinguished.

The complaint claims that at the time firefighters initially left the scene, there was only a limited amount of damage in the building’s second story. Illinois Causality Company, who insured the building, claimed that the fire department leaving the scene before the fire was properly extinguished lead to the functional destruction of the building…
