Haubstadt, Indiana – A routine overnight patrol turned into an unexpected emergency response early Thursday when a Gibson County sheriff’s deputy helped a mother deliver her baby at a local truck stop.
Shortly after midnight on December 4, dispatchers received a 911 call reporting a woman in active labor at the Flying J truck stop on East 1250 South near Haubstadt. Temperatures were cold, traffic was light, and first responders were still en route when Deputy Levi Sims — who was already driving near U.S. 41 and East 1250 South — was flagged down by the baby’s father.
Deputy Arrives Before Ambulance Crews
According to information released by the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office, Sims reached the location within a minute of the emergency call being dispatched. The family urgently signaled him for help, and the deputy immediately stepped in to assist as the mother’s labor progressed quickly.
Officials say Sims supported the mother through the delivery, placing the newborn into her arms moments after birth and tying the umbilical cord while awaiting advanced medical teams. The sheriff’s office noted that the timing was critical, as the baby was delivered before fire and ambulance personnel could arrive.
Firefighters and EMS Take Over Medical Care
