HENDERSON, Ky. (FOX 56) — Few Kentuckians remember who Adm. Husband E. Kimmel was. Still, he played an important role in one of the most significant moments of the 20th century: the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.
According to Sam Terry’s Kentucky, Kimmel and his six siblings were born in Henderson on North Green Street. He graduated from Henderson High School and attended Centre College for one year before being appointed to the United States Naval Academy in 1900.
Just before the U.S. entered World War II, Kimmel was deployed to Honolulu, Hawaii, where he was commander-in-chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet on the day the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, the post read.
