A Love for Old World Christmas Traditions – Victorian Christmas in Evansville
I have always been fascinated with old-world Christmas traditions. My family and I are planning a trip to Carmel, Indiana for their Christkindlmarkt this holiday season, and I am so excited for the food and festivities.
If you are also drawn to old-world Christmas traditions, check out A Chilling Victorian Holiday at Evansville’s Willard Library, presented by the Greater Evansville Steampunk Society.
During the Victorian era, it was common for newspapers and magazines to publish ghost stories for Christmas. People loved curling up by the fire with eerie tales about otherworldly spirits.
You might already know the most famous Victorian Christmas ghost story, Charles Dickens‘ A Christmas Carol.
A Look Back at the Victorian Era
The Victorian era ran from 1837 to 1901 during the reign of Queen Victoria in the United Kingdom, a period of rapid industrial growth. A Christmas Carol, published in 1843, introduced Ebenezer Scrooge, a man who valued money over people. Dickens created Scrooge to criticize how society viewed the poor at that time. True to Victorian tradition, Scrooge’s life is changed through visits from three ghosts, including one that carries a heavy and ominous presence.
