Evansville couple charged after 53 animals found in squalid home

EVANSVILLE — A husband and wife face dozens of animal neglect charges after Evansville police discovered more than 50 cats, dogs and fowl living on their residential property under conditions so hazardous that responding officers needed respirators to safely enter.

Joshua D. Nelson, 32, and Alee J. Nelson, 27, were taken into custody Tuesday evening following a welfare check at their residence, located at 2301 East Franklin Street, where authorities removed 53 animals that investigators said were kept in dangerously unsanitary conditions.

The Nelsons were each charged with 53 counts of animal neglect and booked into Vanderburgh County jail. Both later secured their release after posting $945 cash bonds…
