Hundreds of Evansville’s homeless found shelter this week, but not all

EVANSVILLE — Hundreds of local residents made their way to Evansville homeless shelters this week, seeking respite from the frigid temperatures and blustery conditions.

But not everyone made their way to a place like United Caring Services or the Evansville Rescue Mission. Both organizations are operating under White Flag, meaning anyone can seek shelter there even if a location is at capacity.

Locals were still staying in abandoned homes, tents, vehicles and other makeshift shelters after snow blanketed the city, and as temperatures dipped to levels the National Weather Service called “dangerously cold.”…
