O’Bryan Barrel Apologizes After Odor Release in Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEVV) — O’Bryan Barrel Company is apologizing after an accidental release of odor occurred earlier this week at its Evansville facility during routine drum cleaning operations.

According to the company, the incident happened Monday, February 2, when a shipment of empty drum containers was received from a new supplier. The drums previously contained mercaptan, a sulfur-based substance commonly used to odorize natural gas. When hot water was used during the cleaning process, residual mercaptan odors were released, the company stated.

Company officials said employees quickly worked to identify the source of the odor, halted the cleaning process, and isolated the remaining drums from the supplier. The company said all washing equipment has since been thoroughly cleaned, and the water used during the cleaning process was collected and transported off-site…
