Evansville Police Warn of Rising Bank Impersonation Scams

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEVV) — The Evansville Police Department is warning residents about a growing scam in which criminals pose as representatives from a victim’s bank in an effort to steal sensitive financial information.

According to EPD, scammers are calling or texting people while claiming to be from a bank’s fraud department. In some cases, the caller ID is spoofed to appear as the bank’s legitimate phone number, making the call seem authentic.

Police say the callers often claim there is suspicious activity on an account and pressure victims to act quickly. During the call or text exchange, scammers may ask for personal information such as a Social Security number, debit or credit card number, online banking login credentials, or a six-digit verification code sent via text message…
