Hospital bathroom destroyed: Vanderburgh County inmate charged with escape

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) — A Vanderburgh County jail inmate is charged with escape after officials say he tried to flee from custody.

A release from the sheriff’s office says Connor Spachtholz was taken to an area hospital and admitted for observation on Tuesday. While in the hospital, Spachtholz had asked to use the restroom and subsequently claimed he wished to use the shower.

The deputy assigned to watch Spachtholz then heard a loud crash. The deputy discovered significant damage, including multiple ceiling tiles torn and lying on the floor, a light fixture hanging down, and a section of drywall above the toilet that had been broken off and appeared to have been pulled down from the inside.

Spachtholz claimed the damage was accidental and resulted from grabbing the shower curtain to prevent himself from falling. Investigators say Spachtholz’s account is inconsistent with the physical evidence.

Spachtholz was charged with escape as a level five felony, with additional charges of Criminal Mischief filed by hospital police…
