Local shelters refuse to join Pucks and Paws Night

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – Local animal rescues have decided to step out of this year’s Pucks and Paws Night, hosted by the Evansville Thunderbolts.

The Evansville Thunderbolts invite people to join its annual Pucks and Paws game on March 21 against the Quad City Storm, at 7 p.m. Event organizers say the dog races will take place in the first intermission with adoptable dogs in the lobby. However, some shelters will not be attending this year due to restrictions on certain breeds.

Local animal shelters shared that the Ford Center has implemented a breed restriction policy prohibiting certain dogs—including Pit Bull–type breeds and Rottweilers—from attending. In the case of New Hope Animal Rescue, the restricted breeds make up a sizable percentage of its shelter population. Other area shelters say they simply refuse to participate in what they have determined is an exclusionary event.
