Proposed Henderson County wind farm ignites fight over rural identity

HENDERSON, Ky. — A proposed wind energy project that could become Kentucky’s first utility-scale wind farm has sparked intense debate in Henderson County, where residents fear it would industrialize rural farmland and undermine the county’s tourism and agriculture economies.

At a March 18 public hearing, the Henderson City-County Planning Commission began a yearlong series of meetings to craft new land-use and siting rules for wind turbines while a county moratorium on new wind projects remains in place. The hearing focused on where and under what conditions such development could be allowed.
